Gurmar, (Shardunika in Sanskrit ), also known gymnema, comes from central India and Sri Lanka. In Hindi it means sugar destroyer. It is an extensive shrub with many twining branches. The leaves are used in traditional practices to help maintain healthy glucose levels and are consumed multiple ways including raw, tea, and capsules. It is effective because of its active compound, gymnemic acid. This compound selectively suppresses the sweet taste response without affecting the salt, sour and bitter compounds.
